Research on the Images of the Turning Prayer-Wheel Scripture Tower and the Bell Tower Depicted in Murals， and on Relevant Ancient Sites

Abstract：The Eastern Thousand-Buddha Grotoes in Guazhouisanimportantpartof the Dunhuang Caves.Cave 7，dating fromtheWestern Xiaperiod（1O38-1227CE），containsanarchitecturalimage thatwas heavilyinfluencedbythecultureofthe CentralPlains，particularlythetuingprayer-wheelscripturetowerandthebelltower.Acomparisonoftheseimageswiththe murals in Mogao caves andthe wooden eaves fromthe Song dynastyat Mogao reveals thatthe scripture tower depicted in Cave7 retains someof theoldarchitecturaltraditions oftheearlierDunhuang Caves，whileat the sametime adopting some new styles fromthemuralsoftheSong，Liao，andJindynasties，who weretherivalsandneighborsofthe Western Xia.Thisartworkmarks thefirsttimethatascripture tower with turning prayer wheels appeared inthe Dunhuang murals，andthe image bearsa notable resemblance tothetowerofLongxingTempleinZhengding，HebeiProvince.According toarchaeologicalinvestigation，T'er
Monastery inancient Suoyang Citywhich liesnotfarfromthis site，was abandoned during the Western Xia period.Bystudying severalrelatedimagesinDunhuangcavesandcave7oftheEasternThousand-BuddhaGrotoes，andbasedonrelatedimages in cave7andotherarchaeologicalmaterials，animagined imageoftherestored turning prayer-wheel scripture towerofTa'er Monasteryhasbeencreated.This studydemonstratesthattheabovementioned scripturetowerinheritedthesymmetriclayoutof the paired scripture towers and belltowers found in the Buddhist monasteries of medieval Dunhuang.
