The Essential Elements of a Cave Archaeology Report

—Reflections on the Archaeological Report on Mogao Caves 256， 257， and 259 in Volume II of the Complete Collection of the Dunhuang Grottoes

Abstract：TheArchaeologicalReportonMogaoCaves256，257，259inVolumeIoftheCompleteColectionoftheDunhuangGrotoes waspublished inearly2O24.Thispaperpresentsanew understandingofthe structure，contentsandhistorical contextofthetreecavesdiscuedinthereport，andreviewsthemethodologandwritingstyleusedtocompileitwithspecial atentionpaidtotheimportanceofcavearchaeologyreportsfortheconservationofthesevaluableculturalheritagesites.Inaddition，thestudyproposestwocriticalaspectsofthatoughttobekeptinmindforthecompilationofarchaeologicalreports：（1） Highqualityarchaeologicalreportsarecrucialtoourunderstandingofcavesites.Archaeologicalinvestigationofthehistorical cavesin China is the primarymeans ofcarryingoutresearchoncave temples，as wellas thefinalwordforcaveconservation.Researchers must thereforepaycloseatentiontotheintegrationofthetexts，surveysandphotographs tatwere producedduringarchaeologicalinvestigation.（2）Researchers mustmaintainthesientificityofthearchaeologicalreports.Thescientificmethodologyapliedinthesereports is what ensures thereliabilityandacuracyofthe materialsanddataobtained duringarchaeological investigations.Tothisend，thesurveyingand mappingoftheculturalrelics insidethecavesshouldbecreatedusing3Dlaser scaning whenever posible，and be supplementedby photogrammetryor other technologies-even manual measurement-when necessary.
