A Study on the Dunhuang Manuscripts of Xuanyan Xinji Ming Lao Bu by Yan Shigu

Abstract：Severalfragmentalmanuscriptsfrom Dunhuang have been found tocontainacopyof Xuanyan Xinji MingLao Bu玄言新记明老部，which was writenbyYanShiguof theTangdynastyprimarily toelucidate thekeythemesofeach chapter oftheLaozi老子（also knownas theTaoTeChing）andtoexplore the logicalrelationships betweensubsequentchapters.The textof these manuscriptsalsoincludesthecontentofChapters1to57oftheLaozi，whichintotalconsistedof81chapters.Xuanyan XinjiMingLaoButhus servesasavaluablereferenceforthecolationofboththeLaoziandof WangBi'sfamousannotations，the studyofwhich provides new evidencebeyondthebambooslipsandsilkmanuscripts ofthe Laoziclasicallcited inresearchonthephrase“dazhi buge大制不割”thatcan inkthisphrasetoChapter29of theLaozi.Thisobservationissignificant becauseitverifies tatWangBididnot，assomestudieshaveproposed，ddadditionalcommentarytoapter31.Finallysudy onthis newcopyofthe textallowsustospeculateonthecontentofthe Xuanyan XinjiMing Zhuang Buincludedin the Sui Shu·Jingji Zhi隋书·经籍志（The Book of Sui ⋅⋅ Records of Classic Books），while also offering guidance for the summary of the key themes of each chapter of Laozi， as wellas the logical relationships between subsequent chapters.
