A Preliminary Study on the Buddhist Themes in the Cliff Carvings of Niche 13 at Zhongyan Temple in Qingshen， Sichuan Province

Abstract：There isatotalof25sculptures inniche13of Zhongyan TempleinQingshen，SichuanProvince，the primary themeof whichhaspreviouslybeenidentifiedastheTwenty-FiveBuddhas.Acording totheauthors’investigation，however， niche13difers fromtheotherextantnichesin SichuanthatcontainthethemeoftheTwenty-Five Buddhasinboth formand structure，and insteadresemblesnichesthatexpressthetemeofsixteenarhats，particularlyinitsinclusionofamountainrock seat.Mountainrock seatsareoneof thedefining elementsused insulptures centered aroundarhats in Sichuan，although ithas never beencombined with carvings ofthe Buddhas in the Tang and Song Dynasty; for which reason itcanbeconcluded that manyof thefigures inniche13ought tobeidentifiedasarhatsratherthanBuddhas.Basedonthisobservation，andonrelevant Budhistscriptures and extant sculptures，this paper infers thatthe themeof niche13isasingle Buddhaand twenty-four patriarchs.
