Reexamining the Donors and Construction Dates of Caves 12 and 16 of the Yulin Grottoes

Abstract：The donors whosponsored theconstructionofcaves 12 and16ofthe Yulin Grotoes andthe inscriptions theyleft behindhave beenthesubjectofvarious studiesonthecave temples at thissite.This paper begins byanalyzing thecontroversial questionabout thefamilyrelations between MurongGuiyingand MurongBaoshi，as notedincave12，as wellas theidentityof thedonordescribedas“Prefectural GovernorofGuazhou”inaninscriptioninthefrontcorridorof thesamecave，andconcludes thatMurong Guiyingand Murong Baoshi werelikely grandfatherand grandson，and thattheunknown donorfigure refers toCao Yuanzhong.Secondly，research has foundthattheownerofcave16was notCaoYuande，asiscommonlybelieved，but Cao YuanzhongwhowasthenthePrefecturalGovernorofGuazhou.Finaly，basedontheanalysesabove，theauthorspositthatcave 12 wascompletedin theperiod whenCao Yuanshen Wasinpowerintheregion，whilecave16 was excavatedduring theeignof Cao Yuande.
