From Tang Dynasty Manuscripts to Song Dynasty Printing： The Evolution of the Text of the Chuang Tzu in the Tang and Song Dynasties

Abstract：The transitionfromcopyingtoengravingwasacrucialstepinthehistoryoftextualproduction，andlaidthefoundation forthe laterappearanceofanew formofmanuscript following the Songdynasty.BetweentheTangandthe Song dynasties，thetextofthe Chuang Tzu庄子underwent manynewchanges，aprocessthatbecame knownas the“Tang-Song transformation"istudiesofitstextualhistory.Intermsofthetitles，thewitingstyleandtheformatoftetext，theSongdynastyersion actuallderiveda greatdealofitscontent fromtheTangdynastymanuscripts，withonlysmallchangesbeingmade.Intermsof individualvolumes，theongdyastyversionadoptedthethre-partsystempopularintheTangdynastyandthetextwasdivided intointeralextealndiselssos，icheretenurtrasidintotous;tepreiousngdsty manuscriptsusuallyconsistedof thirty-threevolumes.In termsofchapters，there wereno line breaksorchapterdivisions throughout the whole textof theSongdynastyversion，whilethe Tang dynastyversionwas divided intonumeroussmallrchapters.Forthecharactersofthe Songdynastyversion，the variantandnon-standardformsofcharacterswerereplacedbystandard andcommonones;commonandborrowedcharacters werereplacedbystandardones;anddiffrentiationwas madebetweenancientandcontemporaryformsofcharacters，withonlyafewinstancesoftheancientformsofcharactersbeingusedinpreference tocontemporaryforms.Onthebasisof thesestandardizations，astandardversionoftheChuangTzuwithrelativelyuniformcharactersandaconsistentfontstyle gradualappearedduringtheSongdynasty.Thechangesmadetothetextalsoaffcted thesentencestructuresofprecedingandsubsequentsentences，makingitneaterandmoreconcise，withatendencytoadoptafour-characterformat insymmetricalparalelcouplets.Inadition，thestandardizedversiondeletedunecessaryauxiliarywordsfoundat theendsofsentences intheolderTangandFiveDynasties manuscripts.Finaly，thecharacters themselves werealsomade more orderlyintheir script，which tended tousegeneralized radicals.
