Effects of Plant Spacing on Growth, Yield and Quality of Cucumber under East - West Ridge Cultivation

Abstract:To improve the eficiency of mechanized operations in protected cucumber cultivation,this study investigated the effcts of different plant spacings under east-west ridge cultivation using the cucumber cultivar ‘ Bonai 526⋅ as the test material. Three treatments were established within the east- west ridge system, featuring an operational row spacing of 120cm ,a cultivation row spacing of 60cm ,and plant spacings of 20 cm (T1),25 cm(T2),and 30 cm (T3),respectively. The traditional north-south ridge system,with an operational row spacing of 7O cm,a cultivation row spacing of 50cm ,and a conventional plant spacing of 3O cm,was usedasthe control (CK).The effcts of these configurations were asessed on plant growth,yield,and fruit quality. The results showed that,compared to the north -south ridge system,cucumbers grown under the east - west ridge system exhibited improvements in yield,fruit quality,photochemical eficiency,net photosynthetic rate,transpiration rate,and stomatal conductance during both the spring and autumn seasons.Among the treatments,T2 (25 cm plant spacing) produced the most significant improvements across all measured parameters. In conclusion,under large-span asymmetric greenhouse conditions,east -west ridge cultivation with a 25 cm plant spacing provides higher yields and superior agronomic performance compared to the traditional north -south ridge system.This configuration is wellsuited for mechanized cucumber production in both spring and autumn seasons.
