Analysis of Water Resources Conservation and Intensive Utilization in Zhengzhou City

Abstract:[Purposes] This study focuses on Zhengzhou, a typical water-scarce city in the Yelow River Basin,aiming to analyze its current water resources utilization and existing issues,and propose technological pathways for water conservation and intensive use.[Methods] Based on data from the Zhengzhou Water Resources Buletins (2O19—2O23) and other sources,this research adopts quantitative analysis and systematic review methods to evaluate the water supply structure,utilization efciency,and engineering capacity.[Findings] Zhengzhou exhibits insufficient native water resources and high reliance on external water sources (accounting for about 50% of the total supply). Local water resources are unevenly distributed temporally and spatially,with significant fluctuations in extreme precipitation years (e.g., a (2 23% increase in total water resources in 2O21 compared to 202O). The current water network system lacks interconnectivity,hindering multi-source water complementarity and allocation.Yelow River water diversion projects face technical challenges such as reduced water intake capacity during dry seasons due to riverbed degradation. However,technologies like graded water supply and recycling (e.g. sequential use of ecological water followed by agricultural irrigation)can ffctively enhance water use efficiency.[Conclusions] The establishment of an interconnected modernized water network,implementation of technology-optimized graded water supply and recycling strategies,and addressing shortcomings in waterconservancy infrastructure can significantly improvethe eficiency and sustainability of water resources utilization in Zhengzhou.This approach offers a reference for other water-scarce cities.
