Abstract: [Purposes] Addressing the structural cracks ina plain-type earth filldam,this study utilizes multi-sourcedata fusion to reveal the spatial distribution pattern of the crack system and clarify its formation mechanism.[Methods] Geological surveys of the dam body were conducted,employing geophysical exploration methods including the high-density electrical method,ground-penetrating radar method, and intermediate gradient method.These were complemented by driling exploration and experimental verification for a comprehensive analysis of the crack distribution characteristics and their causes. [Findings] The study indicates that the crack system exhibits significant stratification.Cracks in the shallow layer ( ⩽4 m)account for 82.2% ,with the maximum development depth of 7.2 m consistent with the dam height. Transverse cracks predominate (63.0% ),and the bimodal distribution of dip angles ( 34∘ } 86∘ )reflects shear-tensile composite failure induced by discontinuous compaction. Cause analysis identifies uneven filing and insufficient compaction as the dominant factors.[Conclusions] This study successfully identified the causes of the cracks in the dam body,providing valuable reference for the geological investigation and design of similar projects in the future.
