Style transfer based face expression recognition under simulated prosthetic vision

Abstract:Atpresent,forpatientswithsevereretinitispigmentosaorage-related maculardegeneration,retinalprosthesisis stiltheironlyectivemeansofvisualrehabilitationInviewofthis,animageprocessngstrategyhichachievesiagestyle conversionbytheAdalNalgorithmisproposedinordertoachieveaccuraterecognitionof expressonsunderprostheticvision.In thisstrategy,theoriginalfaceimageisconvertedintoasketchyfaceimageandkeyfacialpointsaremarkedwiththeDlib library.Thefaceregionistheninterceptedbasedonthesekeypointcoordinates,followedbyapixelationprocessAcomparative studywas madeontheexpresionrecognitionefectsof theoriginalimageandthatof the proposed methodundernormal human vision.Additionallyheexpressionrecognitionefectsoftheproposedmthodatthrrsolutions(2424322and4848) werecomparedwith thoseoftheoriginalimagedirectlypixelatedundersimulatedprostheticvision.Theexperimentalresults showthatheaccuracyratesfortheexpressionrecognitionefectsoftheoriginalimageandtheproposedmethodundernormal human vision are 71.58% and 60.41% ,respectively. The proposed method is proved to be more beneficial for expression recognition at low resolutions of 24×24 and32×32 in comparison with the method of pixelating the original image directly.
