Abstract: This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the translation history and dissemination of fu poetry, namely rhapsody,in the English-speaking world, examining both the scope of translated works and the distinctive features of fu translation. Since John Chalmers’ pioneering translation of Pheasant Shooting in 1873,the English rendering of fu poetry has evolved from fragmented individual efforts to a more systematic scholarly endeavor. Early sinologists like Herbert Alen Giles and Wiliam Alexander Martin laid crucial groundwork for introducing fu literature to Western audiences, though their contributions remained limited in volume.A significant breakthrough came with Arthur Waley's The Temple and Other Poems, which marked a watershed moment in the Western reception of fu poetry and stimulated further translational developments. Subsequent generations of scholars, most notably Burton Watson and David Knechtges, have not only substantially expanded the corpus of translated fu but also elevated the quality and academic rigor of these translations. The translation of fu exhibits several characteristic patterns:an initial phase of cultural introduction preceding active exportation; predominant leadershipby academic specialists; anevolutionary trajectory from piecemeal efforts to comprehensive treatment;and particular attntion to female authors. Notably, the translation enterprise has maintained balanced focus between canonical works and newly uncovered literary texts.
