Diachronic Change of Conversational Implicature: An Explanation Based on the Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model

Abstract: Given the problems of meaning interpretation models， this study examines diachronic change of meanings by using the Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model based on the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. It is found that there is a diachronic change of different types of meanings. Conventions and contexts play a synergistic role in meaning change，and context-dependent particularized conversational implicatures gradually develop into conventionalized new coded meanings in the repeated usage of language. Meaning change is the entrenchmentconventionalization process from individual cognition to collective society. This study reveals the nature of meaning change of conversational implicatures from a diachronic dimension, which opens a

new perspective for the study of polysemy
