Study on Curve Negotiating Performance and Wear of the Active Radial Bogie for Meter-gauge Railways

Abstract: The meter-gauge railways play an important role in the trade transportation of Southeast Asia. However,this region is mostly mountainous with complex terrain and small curve radii,resulting in poor vehicle curve negotiating performance,low negotiating speed and severe whel-rail wear. In view of this,the article proposes an active radial implementation method for meter-gauge bogies based on two control strategies:PIDcontrol and sliding mode control,and compares and analyzes the dynamic performance and the wear state diference between conventional bogies and active radial bogies when negotiating curves. The study result shows that under the studied track conditions,compared with conventional bogies,the maximum lateral displacement of wheelset in the active radial bogie is reduced by 65.54% ,the maximum attack angle of wheelset reduced by 47.75% ,the maximum derailment coefficient reduced by 61.11% ,the maximum lateral forceofaxlereduced by 79.37% ,themaximum wheel load reduction rate reduced by 78.95% ,andthe maximum wear reduced by 69.74% ;in terms of tread wear,the wear of the inner wheels of the guide wheelset is reduced by up to 43.90% ,and the wear of the outer wheels reduced by up to 35.19% ;in terms of wheel flange wear,the wear of the outer wheels of the guide wheelset is reduced by up to 79.92% .Theactive radial bogie makes the position of wheel-rail wear change,thus mitigating the wear between wheel flange and rail side.In terms of active radial control,the sliding modecontrol has a better effect than the PID control. The study result above can provide a basis of study for improving the curve negotiating performance of vehicles for meter-gauge railways and reducing the whel-rail wear and also acertain technical support for developing meter-gauge bogies with higher speed.
