From the Celestial Empire to the Maritime Nations ： On the Geographical Writings in Haiguo Tuzhi

Abstract： Following the Opium War， intellectuals represented by Wei Yuan introduced the achievements of modern geography into China through the translation of Western geographical works. In the Haiguo Tuzhi（Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms），Wei Yuan， with the explicit aim of enriching the state and strengthening its military power，adopted modern geographical tools and focused on the Earth' s surface environment and world regional divisions in his regional geographical writings. This work significantly promoted the modernization of Chinese geography.
