Wei Yuan’s Theoretical Analysis of the Causes of Defeat in the Opium War

HUANG Qiusheng, SUN Donghua (School of Marxism,Shaoyang University,Shaoyang 4220o0,China)

Abstract: As the first Chinese intellctual to “see the world with open eyes”, Wei Yuan argued that the defeat in the Opium War was not due to backward weaponry, but to an integrated crisis epitomized by his dictum: “superior weapons are no match for national unity”. Politically, widespread official corruption, rigid autocratic monarchy, and an impractical imperial examination system resulted in a dearth of talent and flawed decision-making. Economically,a fragile natural economy, lagging industrial technology, fiscal crisis, and opium proliferation collctively weakened the state’s capacity to fight. Diplomatically, prolonged isolation led to a severe lack of understanding of the West and frequent strategic miscalculations.Militarily, there was a significant generational gap in equipment and technology, outdated tactical thinking, and a lack of systematic research and development, as well as coordinated operational capabilities.
