Abstract: Mechanical metamaterials exhibit manycounterintuitive mechanical properties bychanging theirinteral geometry.We proposeamechanicalmetamaterialcomposedofgearsasbasicelements.Thegearbasedmechanicalmetamaterialproposed here is a multistable structure,whichcanbecontiuouslyconvertedbetweenvarious stablestatesthroughthe meshingofgeartethThe continuous switchingbetweenstates enables themechanicalmetamaterialtoexhibitinsitucontinuouslytunablemechanicalproper ties.Themechanicalpropertiesofthemechanicalmetamaterialswerestudiedbyusingthefiniteelementmethod.Theresultsshow thatthegearbasedmechanicalmetamaterialsexhibitedcontinuouslyadjustablesifness,variablegeneralizedshearstifss,and adjustableaccelerationtransmisibilty.Theseuniquepropertiesofmechanical metamaterialsprovidenewideas forcreating pro grammable metamaterials with insitucontinuouslyadjustable mechanicalproperties,andareexpected tobeappied inthfieldsof smart materials and engineering.
