Abstract:Recentearthquakedamage investigations foundthatalargenumberofreinforcedconcreteframebuildings wereheavily destroyedatbeam-columnjointsandcolums,withoutformingthebeam-hingingmechanismexpectedinthedesig.Instalingreinforcedconcretewingwalsbesidetheexistingcolumnsremainsafundamentalandeffectivestrengthening method,byimproving seismic performance of both the columns and the joints,while promoting a beam-yielding mechanism. Two 1/2 -scale frame specimenswere manufactured,andoneofthem asstrengthenedbypostinstalationwingwall.Byquasistatic tests,hystereticbhav iour,deformationcapacityenergydisipationpowerandfailure modeoftetwospecimenswereexamined.Theresultsshowthat thestifess,earingcapacityandenergdisipationcapacityofthestrengthenedframeweresignificantlyimprovedAftestrength ening,failure modeof theframewaschanged fromjointsshearfailuretoexpectedbeam-hinging.Theeficiencyandapplicabilityof wing wallinstalltion method were validated forstrengthening existingframe structure buildings withseriouslyweak beam-column joints.
