Female Crimes and Their Governance in Ireland in the Second Half of the 19th Century

Abstract：Thesecondhalfof the19thcenturywasaperiodwhen Irishsocietyunderwent drasticchanges.Theunprecedentedgreat faminethatbrokeoutinIrelandfro1845to849ledtotecontiuousemergenceofvarioussocialcontradictiosandproblemsduringthis period.Therisingfemalecieratewasoneofthesocialcontradictiosattattie，andinfanticideandviolentcrimeseretheostommonformsoffemalecrime.Ininfanticidecases，mostofthefemalesuspects werefromthelowerclases，andtheyoftenchoseextreme measuresduetopovertyandthesnseofshamebroughtbyilegitimatechildrenMeanile，asthefminemadepeopleattchgreatipor tancetolandatallosts，henfcedwithfamilypropertydisputeswomenofteesortedtovilentbhaviorsInsponsetoeinceas inglyseverephenomenonofemalecrime，theIrishgovermenttook manymeasures，among whichprisonreformwas themostmportant. Althoughcertainachievementsweremade，thecrimerateremainedhigh.Becausethegovermentignoredthatpovertywasthercauseof crimes，only by solving poverty can crime be bettr prevented.
