Influence of Tending and Thinning on the Stand Structure of Secondary Poplar-birch Forest

AbstractTo understand the impact of thinning on the stand structure of secondary poplar-birch forests, this study used secondary poplar-birch forests in the HebeiForestry Bureauas theresearchobject.The species composition,DBH,and HTclass distributionof secondary poplar-birch forests beforeand after thinningwereanalyzed,and diameter distribution models for standsbeforeandafter thinningwere constructedusing normal,log-normal,Weibull,gammadistributionprobabilitydensityfunctions.Theresults indicatethatPopulus Davidian,Quercusmongolia,Brtula platyphylla,Brtula dahurica,and Tiliatuanare the dominant tree species in secondary poplar-birch forests.Thinning has freedup space in the forest stand, causingthediameter distributiontoshifttotherightandthetree heightdistribution toshiftto the left,witha significant increase in the proportion of large-diameter trees.The diameter distribution of the sample plots before thinning was best fited by a log-normal distribution model,while after thinning,some sample plots were best fited by gamma and Weibull distribution models.Thinning removes some trees,changing the structure of the forest stand and enhancing structural diversity and complexity by altering the diameter distribution pattern.
