Research on the Mechanism and Remediation Techniques of Highway Tunnel Defects in Southern Zhejiang

Abstract: [Purposes] Due to the recurrnt cracks, water leakage and other defects in a highway tunnel structure in recent years,the safe operation of the tunnel has beencompromised.Therefore,it is necessary to investigatethe mechanism behind these defects and develop targeted remediation measures.[Methods] Based on the development status of tunnel defects,the formation mechanism of tunnel defects was analyzed through engineering geological survey,core driling and laboratory test.The mechanism of lining structure defect was investigated using finite element numerical simulation,providing fundamentaldata fordeveloping reinforcement design solutions.[Findings]The results indicate that the tunnel intersects nearly horizontally with afault fracture zone containing expansive rock mas,and the spatial location of this fault fracture zone has been identified.Multiple defects were observed in various sections of the tunnel,resulting from water absorption and expansive deformation of the rock massin the fracture zone.During the the 9-year operational period after the construction, no new defects were detected in the tunnel.[Conclusions] The proposed research methodology and targeted reinforcement design schemes provide valuable references for addressing similardefects in tunnel engineering with expansive surrounding rock.
