Analysis ofLongitudinal Force and Air Braking Performance of Heavy-Haul TrainsonLongDownhill Grades

Abstract: [Purposes] Whena heavy-haul train operates on a long downhill grade,repeated cyclic braking operations cause the brake pads to heat up,leading to degradation in air braking performance.Furthermore,significant variations exist inthe air braking force generated bythe same trainat different braking stages and between diffrent trains.To ensure operational safety and reduce driver workload,it is essential to conduct research on the evaluation of air braking performance.[Methods] Collct data on the train control force,cumulative braking and release time of air braking,train running speed,line parameters,and maximum longitudinal force during the operation of heavy-haul trains to form a sample dataset.Use BP neural network training to establish an analytical method for evaluating the longitudinal force of heavy-haul trains.[Findings] Several typical air braking curves from real vehicle data were simulated andanalyzed to verify the applicability of the S-shaped air braking force model,thereby achieving the prediction and evaluation of the maximum coupler compression and tension forces of the entire train during single-step operation of heavy-haul trains.[Conclusions] By analyzing the influence of air pressure distribution at the rear of the train on air braking performance,the air braking performance is categorized into four levels,and evaluation criteria for air braking performance are formulated.Corresponding operational recommendations are also provided,offring technical support for air cyclic braking of heavy-haul trains on long downhill sections and guiding drivers toward safer operation.
