Preliminary establishment of a system for evaluating and characterizing drought resistance in watermelon seedling

Abstract:Inorder toestablishadroughttoleranceidentificationandevaluationsystemof watermelonseedling,and pro videa simpleandrapid screening methodofdrought-tolerant material,five watermelon varieties named Xinong No.8, TianguanNo.2,XinyouNo.2,Zhongxinghong No.1,and Zhongnong MeiguanNo.2were usedastest materials,anda pot experiment was set up with two treatments of drought stress(natural drought for 7d)and normal watering to determinethegrowth indexesofwatermelonand physiologicalindicators,using the methodoftheafiliation function,principalcomponentanalysisandother methods,toanalyze the diferences intheresponseof watermelonvarieties todrought stress,andtoscreenoutthekeydrought indicatorsof watermelonseedling stage.Theresultsshowedthatthe growthand physiologicalindexesofwatermelonvarietieschangedofdiferentdegreesafterdroughttreatment,andtheheightroot length,abovegroundand belowgrounddrymassof watermelonseedling decreased todifferentdegreesasaresultof drought stress;atthesame time,theprolineand malondialdehydecontentofwatermelonseedlingleaves increasedsignificantlyandthecatalaseactivityasehanced,whereasthesolubleproteincontentandtherelativeconductivityinceased; the chlorophyllcontentof watermelonvarieties was increased bydroughttreatment.Through the afiliation function method,principalcomponentanalysisandother methods,it was concluded thattheabovegrounddrymassroot length and malondialdehydecontentchanged significantlyafterdroughtstres,therefore,thesethree indexes were selectedas the ndexes for the identificationof watermelonseedlingdrought tolerance,andtheregression equation was finally established: Y=0.870+0.260RL+0.218SDW-0.426MDA. Drought tolerance was identified according to the magnitude of Y value. Y-value ⩾0.70 are drought-resistant materials, 0.35
