Effects of mixed afforestation of Cunninghamia lanceolata and Liquidambar formosana on forest growth and soil improvement

AbstractInresponse to issues such as soil fertilitydecline inthe managementof pure Cunninghamia lanceolata forests, this study conducted afforestation experiments involving the 3:2 (model A) and 4:2 (model B) row mixed plantingof Cunninghamia lanceolataandLiquidambar formosana,with thepure Cunninghamia lanceolata forest (model C)asthecontrol.Theheight,diameteratbreastheight,biomas,microclimate factors withintheforest,andsoilphysical andchemicalpropertiesofCunninghamia lanceolataandLiquidambarformosanaunderthethreeaforestationmodels were determined.Theresults showed thatthe tre height,diameter at breast heightand total biomassof Cunninghamia lanceolatain themixed forestof Cunninghamia lanceolataandLiquidambar formosana were higher than those inthe pure forestofCunninghamia lanceolata.The air temperature,soil temperature and relative light intensitywithin the forest in model A increased by 8.7% , 8.7% and 7.9 percentage points respectively compared with model C. The soil aeration,organic mater,available phosphorus andavailable potassium contents in modelA were increased by 2.57 percentage points, 9.5% ! 13.2% and 12.5% respectively compared with model C.Overall, the 3:2 row mixture of Cunninghamia lanceolataand sweet gum hasa better efect,which isconducive to the sustainable managementof Cunninghamia lanceolata forests and the continuous utilization of forest land.
