The Semantic Extension Mechanism of the Japanese Compound Verb Sufix "～tsukeru"

Abstract： The polysemyobserved in Japanese compound verbs andthesemanticconnections amongtheirvarious senses constituteaniportanttopicinpolysemyresearchfromtheperspectiveofcogntivelinguistics.Thispaperadoptsacognitivelinguisticapproach，using prototypetheory，metaphortheoryandimageschematheoryasitseoreticalframework，toanalyzehepolyseous structureandsemanticextensionmechanismoftheJapanesecompoundverbsufix"～sukeru.Theaimis touncovertheintealre lationshipsamong itssensesandprovideinsightsforthesystematicacquisitionofcompoundverbs.First，corpusdatawereetracted fromtheBalancdCorpusofContemporary WritenJapanese（BCCWJ），andthesemanticusagesof"～tsukeru"wereclassifiedinto sevencategories.Then，acoreimageschemabasedonthestructureof "causation-motion-contact"wasconstructed，through which the internal logic of each semantic sense is explained by focusing on different components of the schema.
