From“ Gongtongti” to“ Shequ”： The Sinicization of“Community”，a Core Concept of Sociology

Abstract：To investigate the travel of Western theories into China，it is important to clarify how their core concepts evolved in the Chinese context.This paper traces the sinicizing process of the concept "community” from its initial rendition as“gongtongti” to its eventual establishment as“shequ” in the Chinese academic context. By examining the evolving translations since the concept was introduced to China around the 1930s， this paper discusses how Chinese sociologists integrated Western theories with Chinese realities to develop unique community research methodologies. Through mapping the journey of its translation，this paper highlights how Chinese sociologists deconstructed， reconstructed and innovated this concept among Western theories.
