The Representation of China in William Carlos Williams’ Poetry of the Second World War

Abstract: William Carlos Williams seldom depicts the Second World War explicitly,which leads some scholars to the claim that there exists an“absence of war references”in his poetry.It does not hold water as soon as we scrutinize Wiliams’s works during that period of time,including his poetry, essays,letters and autobiography. The seemingly“inaction” about the Second World War in his works actually contains his profound reflections from multiple dimensions.With his complex of Socialism,Williams always regards“the Soviet Union and China” as the“hope of the world”. In his poetry,the vision of China is not only one of the mirrors in the real world,but is perceived as a political and cultural notation,embodying his criticism and reflection on the war and American society. Moreover,under the influence of the Imagist aesthetics of T. E. Hulme and Ezra Pound,Chinese Taoist thoughts seem to be the“the first light”,which consoles and heals Williams’s feeling of disillusion triggered by thewar.
