Beliefs about Creativity of Foreign Language Teachers in Universities

Abstract: Teachers’personal beliefs about creativity influence the cultivation of students’creativity. Such beliefs are specific to academic disciplines. This paper examines the beliefs and teaching practices of university foreign language teachers regarding general creativity and creativity within the foreign language domain through a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews. The results show that teachers generally hold reasonable beliefs about general creativity,which affect their attributions,self-efficacy,and teaching practices in creative instruction. Teachers hold disciplinespecific beliefs about creativity in the foreign language field, yet these beliefs lack comprehensiveness and depth. It is recommended to deepen foreign language teachers’ understanding of creativity within the discipline to promote the development of innovative foreign language education.
