Abstract: The collection of poems Tender Buttons by the renowned American writer Gertrude Stein describes stillife at home. It is celebrated for its pioneering language and techniques, representing the pinnacle of the author's avant-garde aesthetic experiments. Inspired by the Cubist painting, Stein skilfullyappropriates the Cubist creative methods and techniques to conduct modernist literary experiments in Tender Buttons, pursuing the aesthetic effect of “Anders-streben”. Stein draws on the cubist technique of collage and uses language as signs like the cubist painters, creating poems with multiple and uncertain meanings. The poems record the poet’s flowing consciousness and reflect the omnipresent uncertainty in modern society. Tender Buttons indicates that Stein had already started exploring the stream of consciousness since 1914. Stein’s intermedial literary experiments have become the resources of inspiration for many important American modernist writers and
language poets.
