Abstract: The study of prepositions or prepositional phrases as part and parcel of language learning and teaching has been a heated issue due to their highly frequent use and full meaningful varieties. With reference to Haliday’s framework of grammatical metaphor (GM, hereafter) and transitivity typology of circumstantial elements, the systematic research on IN phrases reveals (1) largely IN as adverbials realise spatial meanings; (2) there are 14 kinds of non-spatial meanings, that is,[Extent: duration],[Location: time],[Manner:quality],[Cause:purpose],[Contingency: condition], [Manner:means],[Role:guise],[Angle:viewpoint],[Cause:reason],[Accompaniment: additive],[Contingency: concession],[Contingency: default],[Manner: degree] and [Cause:

behalf],ranging from the highest percentage to the lowest percentage;(3) on the basis of the definition, properties and categorization of GM,five types can be identified, namely,[Contingency: default],[Cause:purpose],[Contingency:condition],[Cause:reason] and[Contingency: concession]. Their production mechanism involves semantic coupling of logical meaning and all are logical GMs. This research expands GM to the rank of group/phrase,and provides insights into relevant prepositional studies and language teaching.

Key words: grammatical metaphor; circumstantial elements; logical GMs; rank of group/phrase
