Abstract: Aksu is located at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and the northern edge of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, enjoying the reputations of “a southern town beyond the Great Wall” and “a land of fruits and melons”. At present, the development of Aksu apples is confronted with numerous challenges: the excessive reliance on chemical pesticides for the control of diseases and insect pests in apple orchards leads to a prominent problem of pesticide residues; the repeated use of herbicides such as glyphosate and paraquat in some apple orchards results in their residues infiltrating into the soil, damaging the soil microbial community and even potentially endangering human health through food chain accumulation; the excessive application of chemical fertilizers in orchards causes soil compaction, leading to nutrient imbalance and quality decline of apple trees. In addition, beneficial organisms such as trichogramma and ladybugs are decreasing in orchards, and even fireflies, which are closely related to the environment, have disappeared locally, putting the ecosystem of apple orchards at risk of imbalance. Therefore, exploring a healthy, safe and environment-friendly production path for high-quality apples has become an urgent demand for the sustainable development of the Aksu apple industry.
