Key Technologies of Branch Thinning for Apple Trees Under Dense Planting Mode

Abstract： Densely planted apple trees are characterized by early fruiting and rapid increase in early yield. This cultivation mode is increasingly widely used in production and has gradually become the main trend of apple production. Tree regulation of densely planted apple trees is relatively simple， with branch laying and branch thinning as the main measures， following the principle of “retaining if space is available， thinning if no space”. Good ventilation and light transmission in the orchard and tree canopy are maintained， tree vigor and crown stability are kept， and high yield and good quality are achieved. Therefore， branch thinning is the main pruning method for tree regulation of densely planted apple trees. According to production experience， the number of thinned branches should be strictly controlled in dense apple production， and branch thinning should be carried out according to the fruiting status of trees. Meanwhile， the method of branch thinning should be determined according to the available space. During branch thinning， attention should be paid to the cultivation of replacement branches， appropriate pruning periods should be selected， and comprehensive control of rot disease should be strengthened， so as to achieve twice the result with half the effort in management.
