In Vitro Antibacterial Effect of Alcohol Extract from Cassia Seed against Staphylococcus Aureus

Abstract: 【Objective】To investigate the in vitro antibacterial activity of alcohol extract from cassia seed. 【Methods】Alcohol extracts of Cassia obtusifolia were prepared at concentrations of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 g/mL. The inhibition zone diameters against Staphylococcus aureus were determined using the filter paper method and the Oxford cup method, with sterile water as a blank control. 【Results】The alcohol extract of Cassia obtusifolia exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus in a concentration-dependent manner. The strongest antibacterial effect was observed at the concentration of 2.00 g/mL, with inhibition zone diameters of 25.6 mm (filter paper disc method) and 28.4 mm (Oxford cup method). The weakest effect was observed at 0.25 g/mL, with inhibition zone diameters of 13.6 mm and 13.4 mm, respectively. The Oxford cup method showed superior antibacterial effects compared to the filter paper method. 【Conclusion】The alcohol extract of Cassia obtusifolia possesses good in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and the antibacterial activity is positively correlated with the extract concentration. These findings provide a preliminary scientific basis for the integrated utilization of Cassia obtusifolia in ecological fruit tree cultivation and fruit food safety.
