The Impact of Free Trade Zone Establishment on High-Quality Regional Economic Development： An Empirical Analysis Based on a Multi-Period Difference-in-Differences Approach

Abstract：As a major strategic initiative of China to deepen reform and opening-up and construct a new system for an open economy，the establishment of Free Trade Zones （FTZs） serves as a crucial engine for driving high-quality regional economic development in the new era.This study treats the establishment of FTZs as a quasi-natural experiment and utilizes panel data from 31 provinces spanning 2009 to 2023.Employing a multi-period difference-in-differences （DID） approach，it investigates the impact of FTZ establishment on high-quality regional economic development and its underlying mechanisms. The findings reveal that the establishment of FTZs significantly promotes high-quality regional economic development，a conclusion supported by robustness tests. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the promotional effect is stronger in coastal regions compared to inland regions，with the third，fourth，and sixth batches of FTZs demonstrating more pronounced effects. Mechanism tests show that FTZs facilitate high-quality regional economic development through three effects：investment，trade，and industrial structure upgrading. Additionally，FTZs exhibit positive spatial spillover efects on neighboring provinces.This research provides theoretical support and empirical references for improving the construction of FTZs and continuously advancing the practical pathways for high-quality economic development.
