On the Word-Formation and Sentence-Construction of Mandarin Chinese from the Perspective of “Tao-Qi” Thought in Traditional Chinese Philosophy

Abstract:Language has both instrumental and ontological aspects,and it is both immanent and transcendent. In the cultural pattern established by the Han nation during the Axial Age,an understanding of the category of“pure relation”was formed. In terms of thinking mode,the Han people tended to regard “relation” rather than“entity”as primary. This thinking mode,together with the grammatical features of Chinese emphasizing parataxis, jointly reflects the transcendent characteristics of Chinese. From a static perspective,the characteristics of Chinese sentence structures bear certain similarities to the trait of“Tao being divided into Yin and Yang”. From a dynamic perspective,the characteristics of Chinese sentence generation sharea certain resemblance to the idea of“Li Existing before Qi". In view of this,we hold that the traits of“Tao”are embodied in the word-formation and sentence-construction of Mandarin Chinese.
