AbstractThe breeding and identification process as well as the propagation techniques of the tree peony variety ‘Molian’weresummarized.This varietyisanexcellnt black-floweredornamental variety bred throughartificial directional hybridization，with the cross combination being‘Heihaijinlong’ × ‘Guanshimoyu’.Afteryearsof observation，propagation，and multi-site trials，thecultivar demonstrated gooduniformityand stability.Its flowers were dark purple with black spots atthe petal base，featuring hardand lustrous petals，upright blooms，long single-flower duration，and strong sun resistance.Theflowering branches were long with elongated internodes，andthe plant exhibits a medium-tallupright growthhabit，high flowering rate，vigorous growth，anda medium （early）flowering period.The main methods of propagation are grafting and division.For grafting，herbaceous peony or tree peony rots were used as rootstocks，performed inmid-to-late Septemberusing the side-vener grafting method.After grafting，the plants were plantedandcovered with soil for moistureretention，becoming ready for transplantingaftertwoyears.Division was carried out from September toOctober，where the mother plant wasseparated into roted shoots，and care was taken to ensure the roots were spread out during planting，with soil mounded for warmth retention.This study provides a reference for breeding tree peony variety with rare flower colors.
