Non-Conventional Functions of Restrictive and Descriptive Adnominal Clauses in Japanese

—Based on Cognitive Linguistics

Abstract:WhileJapaneseadnominalclauseshavebeenextensivelyinvestigated,existingfunctional studiespredominantlyfocus ontheirconventioalsytacticsemanticpropertis,withelativelysareresearchaddressingtheirnonconventioalfunctiosfro cognitivelinguisticperspectives.Thissudydotscognitivelinguisticasitsteoreticalframework,specificallmploingigre Ground TheoryandGrounding Theory,toanalyzeauthentic linguisticdata drawnfrom twoauthoritativecorpora:theTsukuba Web CorpusadtheBalancedCorpusofContemporaryWritenJapanese.Throughsystematicexamination,weidentifydistinctnonconventionalfuncialraeistiofstrictidsitieoalusinJpasstlystrtiedol functionasforegroundingevicesthatstructureinfomationalprominencewithidiscourse.Secondlydescriptiveadnominalcauses enablediscourseproducers tocognitivelymanagethegrounding processof propernouns withrestrictedconceptualbases.Thsefindings provide new insights for advancing research on Japanese adnominal clauses.
