Effects of internet addiction on depresson among college students: mediating role of rumination

【Abstract】 Objective To investigate how internet addiction influences depression among college students andto examine themediating roleofrumination inthis relationship.MethodsAtotalof1347colege students were recruited through stratified randomsampling.Participants were assessed using Young Diagnostic Questionna (YDQ), the Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS),and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results ① Internet addiction wassignificantly positively correlated with rumination r=0.60 P<0.001 )and depression (r=0.51, P<0.001 ) Rumination also showed a significant positive correlation with depression (r=0.43 P<0.001 ) ② Internet addiction hadadirect effectondepression[95%CI (O.31,0.47)], while ruminationmediated therelationship between internet addiction and depression,with a significant indirect effect [95% CI(O.14, O.22)]. Conclusion Internet addiction not only directly predicts depresson but also indirectly exacerbates depressive symptoms through rumination. Educational institutions should prioritize interventions targeting rumination to mitigate the adverse psychological effects of internet addiction among college students.
