Relationship between family function and academic performance in middle school students: the mediating effect of life events

【Abstract】 Objective To analyze the overallstatus of family functioning in middle school students, explore the relationships among family functioning,life events,andacademic performance,and examine the mediating role of life events in theassociation between family functioning and academicperformance.MethodsA totalof 381 middleschool students were assssed using theFamilyAdaptabilityand Cohesion Evaluation Scale II-Chinese Version (FACES I-CV) and the Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Checklist (ASLEC).Academic performance data were collected,and a structural equation model (SEM) was constructed for data analysis.Results ① Families were classified into two functional types: balanced type and intermediate type,collectively accounting for 72.70% indicating generally healthy family functioning. ② Life events were negatively correlated with family functioning 0 r= -0.36, P <0.01) and academic performance ( r= -0.25, P <0.01),while family functioning was positively correlated with academic performance ( r=1 0.32, P <0.01). ③ Life events partially mediated the relationship between family functioning and academic performance, with a mediation effect proportion of 24.24% . The 95% bootstrap confidence interval for the indirect efect was (O.O3,0.13). ConclusionFamily functioning was significantly positively correlated with academic performance and negatively correlated with life events,while life events were negatively correlated with academic performance.Life events played a partial mediating role, indicating that family functioning influences academic performance both directly and indirectly through the pathway of life events.
