ABSTRACT:Aiming atthe problem of poor structural properties and low water holding capacityof sandy soil,this study Was conducted to investigate the efectof sodium bentoniteonsoil properties,structure and growthof hot pepper in sandy soil,and to provide reference for improving the water-holding performance and productioncapacity of sandy soil.From August 2022 to March 2023,an indoor pot experiment was carried out.The experiment wasset up with six treatments of the bentonite application rate:0(CK)5(A1);15(A2);25(A3);35(A4);45(A5) t⋅hm-2 . The effects of different application rates of sodium bentonite on soil physical properties and water holding capacityand growth of hot pepper were investigated.The results showed that bentonite can improve soil properties,adjust soil structure,increase soil water holdingcapacity,and at the same time promote the growth of hot pepper. Compared with thecontrol,theapplicationof bentonite significantly reduced the soil bulk weight and the R value of the three phases,and significantly increased the soil water holding capacity,hardness,total porosity,and the content of WR>0.25mm . The average daily water consumption was reduced by 4.3% to 19.1% ,and the total amount of irrigation water was saved by 1.5% to 16.4% . Compared with the control,the number of fruits per plant and fresh weight of hot pepper were significantly increased by 233.3% to 2566.7% and 16.7% to 72.2% , respectively. In summary,the application of sodium bentonite can improve soil properties,reduce daily water consumption and save irigation water,while promoting the growth and development of hot pepper. Combining the relevant indicators,the study concluded that 35t⋅hm-2 of bentonite had the best effect on sandy soil improvement and Hot pepper growth.
