An Analysis of Women Making Pilgrimage from the Perspective of Qing Dynasty Scholars

Abstract： Underthebackgroundof tedevelopmentofcommodityeconomyandtheprosperityofreligious culture intheQing Dynasty womentraveledaroundundertheguiseofmakingpilgrimageforseekingspiritualsustenance，showingatrendoftransformationfrom “womenfocusingondomestic afairs”to“womenengaging inextemalafairs”.Teemergenceof this penomenonhadsparkedcontroversyamong scholars and formed two main viewpoints.The mainstreamviewbelievedthat women making pilgrimagewas easyto causetroubleandopposedit.Anothersmallnumberofscholarsbelievedthatwomenmakingpilgrimagewasbeneficialfrsolvingsmal livelihoodproblesndpromotingsocialstabilityandtsupportedit.Hwever，sholars inteingDyastyrestilllypposedtothepracticeofwomenmakingpilgrimage.BehindtheoppositionwastheadherencetoConfucianethicsandtheconcesabout the proliferation of secret religions among the people.
