Identification of Mid-Holocene environmental evolution and sedimentary records of extreme events at the Zhushanwan Site in the Yaojiang River Valley

Abstract:TheYaojiangRiver VallyPlainonthesouthemcoastofHangzhouBaynurturedthesplendidHemudu Culture,andthis area ishighlysensitivetoclimateandsealevelfuctuations.HowtheNeolithicinhabitantsadaptedtothisvulnerableenvironmentisahot issueinenvironmentalarchaeologyTakingtheZushanwanSiteexcavatedintheortheasterpartofheYaojangRiverValyPlain as the research object, this paper conducted AMS14C dating,grain size analysis,and geochemical element analysis to try to reconstruct thepaleoenvironmentalevolutionandidentifysedimentaryrecordsofextremeevents.TheresultsshowthatduringthelateHemudu Cultureperiod,thesiteareawasalwaysacoastaltidalwetlandevironment,withtopographyslopngdistictlydownwardfroorth to south.Thestratainthelow-lyingareainthesouthempartofthesiterecordtwophasesoffuvialfodingeventsaccompanedby seawaterntrusionduring5.2~4.9cal.kaBP,whichshouldberaiddepositsduringtyphoonevents.TheNeolithicinhabitantsutilized thepaleotopoaphyandsetledinareaswithghtlyhigherelevatio,eflectingtheirfexibleadaptabilitytotecoastallowlnd environment.However,atthendofteHemuduCulture,thenorthareofteitealsosufeedbvioussawaterrusioading to the abandonment of the settlement.
