Comparative Study on Sedimentary Records of the Heavy Metals in theEstuary and theUp and MiddleReachesof the Yalu River

Abstract:Throughcomparativeresearch,thesedimentaryconnectionof heavy metals betweentheYalu River estuary andits middleandupperreaches has been established,laying afoundation for ecologicalrestorationand environmental assessment throughout the basin.We compared the vertical distribution,anthropogenic deposition flux,R-type clustering characteristics,and geoaccumulation index of heavy metal deposition recorded in A4 column samples from theYalu River estuary with the published data from S1column samples in the middle and upper reaches.The findings revealed that despite numerous synchronous changed in the economic development of the entire Yalu River basin,the processesofheavy metal deposition were not entirely uniform.The heavy metals in the estuary did not solely dependon the runof transport,indicating thatthe heavy metaldeposition intheYalu River estuarysince 2000 has been characterized by near-source deposition. The six heavy metals,namely Pb ,Ni,Cu,As,Cd,and Hg, primarily originated from the natural and agricultural sources,influenced by lithological differences. Cr exhibited a mixed source,sensitive to human activity intensity and adjustments in environmental policies. Zn ,theanthropogenic source,responds directlyand clearly to changes in human activity intensityand environmental policyadjustments.The geoaccumulation index for Hg ,Cd,and Zn in the Yalu River estuary was only between 0~1 ,indicating a slight level of pollution that was generallmanageable.However,Zn,predominantly sourced from humanactivities,had shown arebound trend since2 Ooo,warranting attention.
