Application of Crystallization Granulation Fluidized Bed Technology for TDS Removal from Nanofiltration Concentrate in a Zhengzhou Waterworks

Abstract:[Purposes] This study addresses the issue at a Zhengzhou waterworks where the nanofiltration concentrate exceeds the total dissolved solids (TDS) limit,preventing its direct discharge and necessitating reuse.It evaluates and optimizes the feasibility and treatment performance of a chemical crystallization granulation fluidized bed system for reducing TDS in nanofiltration concentrate,providing reference for practical engineering application.[Methods]A lab-scale chemical crystallization granulation fluidized bed setup was used to treat the nanofiltration concentrate. Process optimization experiments were conduced by varying operational parameters (CaO dosage,residence time,upward flow velocity,packing layer height).The generated crystalline particles were characterized to analyze their morphology and composition,including calcium carbonate content and surface structure.[Findings] The optimal operational parameters from the lab-scale tests were:CaO dosage of 900mg/L ,residence time of 25min , upward flowvelocity of 8.3m/h ,andpacking layerheightof6 cm.Under these conditions,the effluent TDS was 1131mg/L ,achieving a TDS removal rate of 26.7% . Characterization of the product particles showed smooth,compact surfaces with high calcium carbonate content.[Conclusions] The chemical crystallization granulation fluidized bed system can effctively reduce TDS in nanofiltration concentrate (achieving 26.7% removal under the given lab-scale conditions)and generate well-formed,highpurity calcium carbonate crystals.With its compact size,high efficiency,and suitability for automation, this process shows broad application potential in nanofiltration concentrate treatment and reuse,providing parameter references for practical engineering design and operation.
