Abstract:After the death of Yelu Abaoji,Emperor Taizuof the Liao Dynasty,Empress Shulu Ping took power as regent. At that time, the Liao Dynasty faced a successioncrisis. After careful consideration,Shulu Ping decided to support her second son Yelu Deguang to ascend the throne.Even after Deguang's smooth sucesion,Shulu Ping refused to giveup her power anddesignedaninstitutionto sustain herclan’s development: elevating herown family tothestatus of Imperial Clan.Faced with his powerful and scheming mother,Deguang could not openly refuse, yet he had hisown calculations.Taking theopportunityof the deathofEmpress Xiao Wen,he wonoverthe Yishijiclan, the maternalclanof Shulu Ping's ex-husbandandher ful-blooded siblings.By elevating theYishijiclan toan Imperial Clan as well,Deguang brought it into his owncamp, sucesfullybreaking the Boli clan’s monopoly over the empress position, andusing the conflicts between thetwoclans to weaken theoverallpowerof the maternalclans. While seeminglyobedient tohis mother Shulu Ping,Deguang employed indirect political tactics to divide the maternalclansand strengthen imperial power. This reflects the power struggle between the two concealed under the guise of maternal and filial ties.
