From James Legge to Max Miller： A Study of “Oriental Classics” System and Publishing Mechanism in Victorian Era

Abstract：The Victorian project ofthe“Oriental Classics”achieved the institutional transformation of Eastern knowledge within the framework of the British Empire through the threfold mechanism of translation，publishing，and comparative religion.James Legge，through The Chinese Classics，established the paradigm of English translation for Confucian texts，rendering Chinese thought ethical and universalized.Max Muler，through The Sacred Books of the East，constructedthesystemof“comparativereligion，”re-archiving and hierarchizing the Orientalcanon.Together，their enterprises formedaregimeof“knowledge-power-translation，”in which oriental texts were redefined as symbolsof“rational civilization”withinimperial discourse.From the perspectivesof the archaeologyof knowledge and institutional history， this paper exposes the politicallogic and culturalconsequences of this academic project，and further reveals its enduring impact and reinterpretive significance for contemporary cross-cultural knowledge production.
