Abstract:Pingtian Xiangu Baojuan Confered by Imperial Decree is a representative textof the Hexi Baojuan tradition. Previous studies primarily focusedon the l698(37th yearof the Kangxi reign)woodblock-printed edition. In recent years, nine newly discovered manuscript copies from Min County, Gansu, along with one manuscript from Zhangye identified in the 1990s , bring the total to ten manuscript versions. Comparative analysis reveals that these manuscripts, derived from the printed edition as their archetype, circulated widely among the populace. Despite dynamic textual fluidity duringtranscription, they preservedtheritual structureof“inviting deities, entertaining deitiesand sending off deities,” while thecore narrative remained stable within the ten-character verse and prose sections, though other structural elements varied significantly. The colophons of theprinted edition and manuscripts difer markedly, documenting diverse motivations forcopying, such as prayers forofspring, longevity,or blessings, alongside detailsof the scrols’creation, recitation protocols, sacred rituals, and information on patrons, scribes, transcription processes, ilustrations, andbindings. These elements collectively illuminate the rich tapestry of local folk culture.
