Effects of different epoxy resins on the embedding effects of adult butterfly specimens

AbstractTo explore the preparation method of epoxy resin embedded specimens of adult buterfly5 types of epoxy resin AB gluemixtures （starrysky epoxyresin，clear ice epoxyresin，gem epoxy resin，high-transparencyepoxyresin and mixed crystal epoxy resin） were prepared at a mass ratio of 3：1 . Papilio xuthus was selected for the preparation of embedded specimens to screen out the suitableepoxy resin type.Furthermore，embedded specimens were fabricated fromdriedadultspecimensof representativespecies belonging toPieridae，Papilionidaeand Satyridae，the characteristic diffrences among the above specimens were analyzed，and the qualityof the embedded specimens was evaluated.The results showed that compared with the dried specimens，the Papilio xuthus specimens prepared with the 5 aforementioned epoxy resin AB glues allpresented partial dissolution and discoloration of wing scales.Among them， the specimens made with clearice epoxyresin hadthe slightest changes，and their morphological characteristics were theclosestto thoseof thedried specimens.For the specimensof Pieridaeprepared withclear ice epoxyresin，the orange-yellow spots onthe hindwings were severely dissolved withonlythe outlines remaining，andtheblack scales on the hindwing margins alsosuferedsevere dissolutionanddiscoloration.Incontrast，thewing scalesoftherepresentative Satyridae specimens prepared with clear ice epoxy resin had slight disolution，showing asmall difference in morphological efect from the dried specimens.Inconclusion，clear ice epoxyresin is suitablefor theembedding preparation of specimens from Papilionidae adults and Satyridae adults.Appropriate types of epoxyABadhesive should be selected for the embedding preparation of adult butterfly specimens.
