Effects of thinning on growth and ecological functions in Larix gmelinii plantations in semi-arid regionsunder 12-year positioning monitoring

AbstractTo explore the efects of thinning measureson the growthand ecosystem functions of Larix gmelini artificial forests insemi-aridregions,the Larix gmeliniiprotective forests inWangyedian forestfarms in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia were selected as the research objects.2 treatments were setup: thinning treatment (T1)and no managementcontrol(CK).Through12yearsoflong-term monitoring,the growth indicatorsoftrees,forest standvolume, andbiodiversityand other indicators were systematically analyzed.Theresults showed that thinning significantly promoted thegrowth of trees.The diameterat breast height (17.15cm)and tree height (16.43m)ofT1 treatment were (2 31.92% and 19.32% higher than those of the CK treatment,respectively.The stand volume (242.44m3/hm2 )of T1 treatment was 51.96% higher than that of the CK treatment. The Simpson index (1.O0 for shrubs and O.85 for herbaceous plants)and Shannon-Wiener index (1.31for shrubs and 2.O1 for herbaceous plants)of the understory vegetation under T1 treatment were significantly higher than those of the CK treatment.The ecosystem service value was significantly improved,and the annual carbonsequestration value (156OO yuan)and oxygen release value (216OOO yuan)increased by 38.05% and 38.36% ,respectively,compared with the CK treatment.In summary, moderate thinning can optimize the stand structureof Larix gmelinii artificial forests insemi-arid regions,enhance wood productionandecological service functions,and isanefective way toachieve near-natural management.Thispaper providesareference for the nearnatural management of regional artificial forests.
