Abstract:【Objective】This research aims to compare the efects of pruning and non-pruning on thephysical and mechanical propertiesofChinesefir(Cunninghamia lanceolata)woodandtoprovideascientificbasis forthecultivation of large-diameter,knot-free timber.【Method】A17-year-oldChinesefirplantationwasselectedasthestudysite.A randomized block design was implemented with two treatments:pruning and non-pruning.Twentyyears after pruning, the mean sample tree method was employedto select representative pruned andnon-pruned trees for the measurement of various physicaland mechanicalpropertiesof the wood.【ResultAfter2O years of pruning ina17-year-old mid-rotation stand,the form factorof Chinese fir wood was significantly increased.Pruning had no significant efectonstem taper, height-to-diameterratio,oven-drydensity,air-drydensity,volumetricshrinkagecoeficient,shrinkagerate,orsweling rate.However,pruning significantlyreduced tangential hardness,radial hardness,compressive strength,and tensile strength.Specifically,the tangential and radial hardness of pruned wood were 14.52% and 16.43% lower,respectively, than those of non-pruned wood. The order of hardness across grain directions was:endwise > tangential > radial. No significant differences wereobserved inendwise hardnessor modulus of elasticitybetweenprunedandnon-pruned wood. 【Conclusion】After 2O years,pruning significantlyinfluenced the form factor andcertain mechanicalpropertiesof Chinese firwoodbutdidnotsignificantlyafectstemtaperorheight-to-diameterratio.Whiletangentialandradial hardness,compressive strength,and tensilestrength were significantlyreduced,endwise hardnessand modulusof elasticityremainedunaffected.Both prunedandnon-prunedChinese firwood exhibitedphysicaland mechanical propertieswithin the“verylow to low”range.Thecomprehensivestrength qualitycoeficientof pruned wood was slightly lower than thatof non-pruned wood;however,pruningdidnotalter itsoverall clasification.Both typesof wood were classified aslow-strength timber.
