Characteristics of forest carbon sinks and management implications in the context of carbon neutrality

Abstract:Motivated bythestrategic goalsofcarbonpeakandcarbonneutrality,thecarbonsink functionof forest ecosystems hasbeen transitioned fromaconventional ecological service toacornerstoneofnational climate governance. However,anadaptive forest management system capable of effectivelyadressing climate change challenge remains underdeveloped.To tacklewidespread cognitive misconceptionsandpractical challenges in forestcarbon sink management,this studyintroducesa framework defining four core characteristicsof forestcarbon sinks:integrity, saturation,fluctuationand persistence.This framework clarifies thekeyecological mechanismsthatconstrain forest carbon sinkfunctionality.Specifically,integrityrevealstheprofoundrelianceofforestcarbonsinksonecosystem integrity;saturationcharacterizesthephysical capacity limitsofboth bioticandabioticcarbonpols;fluctuation highlightsthehighsensitivityandrisksofcarbonsink stabilityundervarious disturbances;and persistencedefines the critical time scale forwhich carbonsequestration mustbe maintained toalign with carbon neutralitytargets.Basedon this framework,thestudy constructsa comprehensive adaptive forest management strategy system.Key strategies include: (1)conserving ecosystem the integrityand optimizing stand structures;(2)enhancing carbon sink capacity and threshold-based responseregulation;(3) preventing carbonsink risksand strengthening system resilience; (4)safeguarding the long-term carbon sequestration through the full-cycle management.Our findings emphasize the urgent need to develop precision regulation technologies that adress these inherentcarbon sink constraints.Such a technological advancesare essentialforenhancing the stabilityand efectivenessofforestcarbon sinksinsupporting the carbon neutrality process.
